Great Low-Carb Sources of Fiber

easy healthy mealsWe all know that dietary fiber is an important tenet of both digestion and overall health, and that most Americans don’t get their daily recommended amount. We all also know that too many starchy carbs can lead to inflammation and weight gain. Since fiber is a carbohydrate, it also often comes in high-carb clothes. 

While fiber is a carbohydrate, it’s the carbohydrate that our body doesn’t digest. (This is where the whole concept of “net carbs” in a low-carb eating plan comes from.) If your dietary needs require a lower amount of carbs, don’t worry! Here are some of our favorite low-carb but still high-fiber options!

Chia

Chia is one of our favorite sources of fiber! All of the carbohydrates in chia seeds are in the form of soluble fiber. That’s right – 5 g carbs in 1 T of chia means 5 g of fiber towards your daily recommended intake!

Cauliflower

Cauliflower provides 2 g of fiber per cup (chopped), whether you’re having it roasted or as a pizza crust. Ask about our roasted cauliflower steaks if you’re looking for easy healthy meals full of fiber!

Blackberries and Raspberries

Both of these delicious berries are low in sugar but boast 8 grams of fiber per cup. So eat your heart out!

Coconut

Not only is the oil a nutritional powerhouse, but unsweetened coconut is also surprisingly high in fiber. 

Avocado

Yes, the avocado makes yet another top health list! In addition to healthy fats and a creamy, buttery texture, avocados are also a great source of fiber.

Oats

While oats are still a grain, they are the least carb-heavy of the grains. If “less carbs” rather than low-carb is the name of your game, consider some stone ground or whole rolled oats!

Lentils

Lentils (and legumes in general) are also for the more carb-lenient, but one serving yields 9 grams of fiber. That’s about ⅓ of your daily recommended amount!
