Summer vacations are in full swing! In fact, as I’m writing this blog post I am on a little vacation with my family. Traveling is fun but it can also be exhausting! Whether you are driving or flying, it’s important to bring healthy travel snacks along to keep your energized and help you avoid indulging in junk food that will leave you feeling sluggish. It can be hard to come up with snack ideas that will pass TSA or fit into a backpack, so we have come up with some delicious and healthy options that you can take on your summer adventures!
Tea Bags – There are a variety of herbal teas that offer a plethora of health benefits. Don’t get stuck with whatever they have on the airplane, bring your own! Just ask for a cup of hot water and stick your favorite tea bag in. You will be happier and healthier for it. Be sure to pack non-caffeinated varieties so you can still catch some zzz’s.
Pumpkin Seeds – While you may think of peanuts or almonds as a quick, protein filled snack, pumpkin seeds are a little more interesting and just as healthy! They contain tons of antioxidents to calm those free radicals, and contain a wide variety of nutrients including magnesium, copper, zinc and protein. Pumpkin seeds are best roasted and you can either make them salty or sweet, your choice! Here are six different flavors (including cinnamon sugar) that you can try!
Roasted Chickpeas – Another protein packed snack! There are places that you can buy these in stores, but I think that homemade ones are SO much better. To make this wonderful snack, check out our roasted sweet and spicy chickpea recipe!
Pita Pocket with Hummus – Between the tahini and hummus, you will be getting lots of satiating fiber and protein. Put it inside a pita and you have the perfect opportunity to add cucumber and bell peppers for even more fiber, and just a little bit more hydration from these water packed foods on your long flight.
Oatmeal Energy Bites – If you haven’t noticed by now, the theme of travel snacks is protein, protein, and protein. While there are lots of foods that you can pack, sometimes there isn’t a lot of time to stop and eat between flights or there isn’t enough room in your bag. One thing that you can pack are these small energy bites that pack a punch! The almond butter in these offer the protein and they contain natural sweeteners so you don’t have to worry about a sugar crash plus jet lag! Here’s a great “no bake” recipe!
Ham and Jicama Wraps – Jicama is a wonderful root vegetable that doesn’t get enough love. It can almost be described as a savory apple. Nutty and crunchy, this root makes for a fantastic snack. Individually wrap six slices of ham around six slices of jicama. The ham will provide protein and the jicama contains lots of fiber to keep you full on your journey. If jicama isn’t your thing, substitute for celery.
Water, Water, Water – If you are like me, you are so worried about packing healthy snacks that you forget about one of the most important things our bodies need – WATER! If you are traveling on a plane, pack an empty water bottle in your bag to get past TSA and then fill up when you get through security.
